“ASADV’s Name,” An Update from the Board of Directors:

Fellow Community Members,

We, the ASADV  Board of Directors and Executive Director, would like to take the opportunity to respond to recent public conversations with regards to the ASADV name.   Some community members may not be aware of our intentions and process, and we would like to share our thoughts with you at this time.

Trends in the field of social services, and particularly domestic violence, have evolved over the years. One such significant change is the use of the term “victim” – professionals in the field are encouraged to use terminology which focuses on the potential for an individual who has experienced violence to heal by utilizing the system and its resources to protect themselves from any further abuse by their perpetrator.

The term often currently used in the field is “survivor” and it is an empowering word which many in social services deem to be more appropriate as we serve those who are either presently in a domestic violence situation or have left one. This being said, the ASADV Board of Directors and Executive Director are interested in a change of name which does not involve the term “victim.”

We will be providing several opportunities, for members of our community to share their thoughts as we weigh in on this important topic, potentially through an open forum at the Deaf Club as well as the utilization of an online poll. Your input, as always, is valued.

As a community organization, we remain committed to providing advocacy services for our clients first and foremost. The ASADV Board of Directors and Executive Director look forward to ensuing dialogues with various constituencies in the time to come.

Sincerely,

James D. Munro, President
